PROJECT VISION

CGMH is committed to supporting local health system priorities to achieve its vision of "Outstanding Care - For Life". A new hospital will help CGMH realize this vision by improving access through increased capacity and enabling the expansion and reorganization of services to best serve the needs of a growing community through all stages of life. A new hospital that achieves contemporary standards for health care facilities is considered essential to support and set the foundation for the future model of care.

  • Maximize efficiency and timely access to appropriate care.
  • Enable best practice and evidence based care.
  • Support coordinated care planning as part of a regional integrated care system.

  • Standardize space/rooms.
  • Plan 100% private rooms.
  • Optimize departmental adjacencies to achieve timely and effective delivery of services.

Exceptional Experience for All

Planning Guidelines
  • Create user friendly, supportive and health promoting spaces.
  • Provide opportunities for respite and privacy.
  • Create space and amenities that are accessible, welcoming and support a diversity of cultures, ages, abilities and genders.

Planning Specifications
  • Meet accessibility standards.
  • Create access to outdoor areas.
  • Plan multi faith spiritual spaces.
  • Include senior friendly and baby friendly space within the design.
  • Focus on wellness including air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community.

Healthy, Safe and Inclusive Workplace

Planning Guidelines
  • Create user friendly, supportive and health promoting spaces.
  • Promote wellness.
  • Incorporate space, technology and equipment that protects and supports staff in care/service delivery.
  • Create space and amenities that are accessible and support a diversity of cultures, ages, abilities and gender.

  • Meet contemporary standards (CSA, IPAC, LEED).
  • Optimize adjacencies and design to reduce walking distances.
  • Include facilities for changing, showering, secure storage of belongings, parking, exercise.
  • Spaces designed for rest, recovery and reflection.
  • Include gender neutral washrooms/change rooms.

Integrated Education and Learning

Planning Guidelines
  • Integrate education and learning in all clinical areas.
  • Plan interprofessional, rather than discipline specific spaces and amenities.
  • Provide opportunities for collaboration and quiet study.

  • Create multi use, shared and accessible meeting and learner spaces.
  • Incorporate technology for hybrid learning.
  • Plan learner facilities close to the point of care Include a variety of space to accommodate huddles, brainstorming, education sessions, private work, and simulation.

Technology Enabled Service Delivery

Planning Guidelines
  • Automatic systems and robotics enable delivery of specimens, supplies, medications and patient meals.
  • Support easy to use and convenient services.
  • Improve communication and collaboration among providers and with family/patients.
  • Empower patients and families in care through technology.
  • Support virtual care.

Planning Specifications
  • Use of Real-Time Location Services (RTLS) to locate patients, providers and equipment and remotely monitor environmental conditions.
  • Flexible options for self management of care through online portals and onsite kiosks.
  • Provide space and technology for virtual visits and specialist consults.

Flexible and Adaptive Hospital Facility
